6. SANIBEL, FL: SANDDOLLAR ACCESSIBLE CONDO
Ken Piech and his wife wrote to share the news of their wheelchair accessible Sanddollar Condo on Sanibel, Florida.
Piech writes: “We have recently remodeled our condo with many wheelchair friendly features, including all tile floors, wide doorways and hallways, wide turning radius in kitchen, walk-in/roll-in shower, grab bars for toilets and showers, etc. Our contractor widened the door into the master bedroom and put lever handles on all the doors. In addition, we installed ramps for the entrance doorway and for the doorway going out to the lanai, which has a great view of the beach.
Sanibel Island has limited development so that 70% of the island will always remain natural preserve. There are many miles of nice beaches and no high-rise buildings. Sanibel Island has over 40 miles of bicycle trails. Billy's rentals has a tandem bicycle (aka The Duet) with a wheelchair in front and a regular bike on the back. Billy's rentals offers The Duet to use for two hours at no charge. Billy's rentals offers beach wheelchair rentals for $35 per day and a weekly rental charge is $85.
Sanibel has wheelchair accessible restrooms at all its public beaches. The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum and the Ding Darling National Wildlife Sanctuary are both very wheelchair accessible and excellent places to visit. Although most/all the restaurants are wheelchair accessible, their restrooms are variable relative to ease of use for someone in a wheelchair. Although some of the restrooms are marginal, others have large doors with a large stall with adequate turning space and its own sink and grab bars.”
To learn more, visit their new, condo specific web site at http://sanibelsanddollarc201.com/ featuring numerous photos, information and a wheelchair accessibility page, detailing some of our condo's wheelchair friendly features.
